The long road to recovery is often unpaved. It’s often littered with potholes and stop signs that serve as setbacks, prohibiting progress. For those who have prided themselves on their pre-injury or pre-illness fitness level, the first day of physical rehabilitation can be nearly as depressing as the day of the diagnosis or injury. I was perhaps 9 or 10 years old. It was the first week of summer vacation, and I was helping my uncle and my older cousin, along with my Dad, ‘bale hay’, the farm practice of loading cut and bundled hay onto a wagon and hauling it back to the barn for winter storage.
